How important is university ranking to you? Does ranking affect your final decision when choosing an institution in the UK? As Ghana’s UK education specialist, UKEAS would like to advise students that university ranking only tells part of the story. What’s more important is to look at the performance of each school of the universities. Take Northumbria University as an example, it may be some distance away from the top of the league table, but Northumbria’s Newcastle Business School has been named the UK’s Business School of 2015 by Times Higher Education. What’s more? Northumbria was also shortlisted for the Entrepreneurial University of the Year award. All these achievements show that even though university rankings provide us with an initial guideline for school choices, the individual performance of each department tells more about your intended profession.
Newcastle Business School aims to help students achieve leadership, management and career potential through academically excellent education that is rich in research and related to business.
The award judges said that the main reason why the school triumphed was its fundamental review of the purpose of a modern business education. They explained: “The fact that their review involved fairly fundamental changes across all aspects of the school made it even more notable. Crucially, it was able to quantify the impact of the changes in terms of staff development, student mobility and employability, and accreditations.”
When looking into universities, often it is easiest to look at some of the most accessible criteria out there like the university rankings. However, it is important to figure out the factors that matter most to you. Is it the location? The teaching or the research quality? Does it specialise in the subject area you’re most interested in? Readily available information in rankings can definitely help you with your process in choosing an institution, but they shouldn’t be the most important element when making your final decision.
Newcastle Business School has recently been given the award of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International) double accreditation in business and accounting, making Northumbria part of an elite group of less than 1% of business schools in the world.
If you’re currently researching a UK business school to attend, Northumbria University may be the answer!
