University of Kent

Canterbury, Kent CT2 7NZ, United Kingdom

About the University

The University of Kents original name was the University of Kent at Canterbury, reflecting the fact that the campus straddled the boundary between the county borough of Canterbury and Kent County Council. During the 1990s and 2000s, the University of Kent expanded beyond its original campus. It now has campuses in Medway, Tonbridge and Brussels, and works in partnership with Canterbury College, South Kent College and Mid-Kent College. Although the name University of Kent at Canterbury now only refers to the original campus, the abbreviation UKC is still heavily used by both students and alumni for the whole University.

The University of Kents Accommodation Office offers an information and advice service to assist students with housing before they arrive, and during their time studying at the University. The University of Kent has approximately 4,000 places for students to live in various different types of accommodation ranging from traditional Halls of Residence to five or six bedroom shared houses.

The small community of students and staff who arrived in 1965 were our pioneers, shaping the University of Kent into the inclusive, international and inspiring community that it is today. From a university started with some 500 students and 150 staff on a greenfield (and rather muddy) site, the University of Kent has grown today into an institution of over 19,000 students and over 3,000 staff. Consistent top 20 positions in major league tables and two Queen’s Anniversary Prizes reinforce its enviable reputation for the quality and distinctiveness of its academic activities and locations. With campuses at Canterbury and Medway and centres in Brussels, Paris, Athens and Rome, Kent is “the UK’s European university".
